TIRANA -- Prosecution has launched an investigation against Albanian Deputy PM Ilir Meta based on a video which shows him rigging hydropower plant concession tender. He will be charged with accepting bribes and abuse of office, the prosecution announced yesterday. Meta has decided to renounce his immunity. The prosecution reacted after Top-Channel TV aired a videotape showing the deputy PM and Energy Minister Dritan Prifti discussing corrupt deals. Meta has denied the allegations, adding that he has renounced his parliamentary immunity in order to allow the investigators to probe corruption allegations, Reuters reported. "For the sake of transparency following accusations of corruption and violation of the law, I officially announce I relinquish my parliamentary immunity," Meta told reporters. The Albanian deputy PM dismissed the tape a "fabrication" and an "ugly political and moral bluff". Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha has welcomed Meta’s decision to relinquish his parliamentary immunity and face the investigation, Albanian ATA news agency reported. The prosecution will use the videotape as evidence during the proceedings, ATA added. |
